Unconventional Olympic Sports

Unconventional sports enthusiasts are competing for a chance to pitch the next Olympic sport this week as part of the Petro-Canada Big Dream contest.

Twenty BC finalists will have two minutes each to convince a panel of celebrity judges that their favourite sport deserves Olympic Games status on Friday, Nov. 2, beginning at 10:30 AM at Vancouver's Robson Square.

The contest is open to all unconventional sports or pastimes -- so expect some colorful events.

Celebrity judges are Canadian Olympic swimmer Brent Hayden and aspiring Olympic taekwondo athlete Yvette Yong.

Hayden is one of only three Canadians to swim the 100-metre freestyle in under 50 seconds and part of Canada's 2004 4x200 Freestyle Relay team.

Vancouver's Yong ranked in the top 10 at the 2007 World Championships in taekwondo.

Two other groups have competed in Montreal on Oct. 30 and in Calgary Nov. 1. Ontarians will face off in Toronto on Nov. 3.

Each venue will videotape the semifinals, with one gold medal finalist being selected in each city.

The four finalist's videos will be posted on the website November 5 and the public may vote for their favourite.

The entry that earns the most votes will have the opportunity to pitch their sport to the Canadian Olympic Committee and receive a trip for two to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The overall winner will be announced the week of November 19, 2007.

I wonder if sleeping in Quebec's Ice Hotel could be an Olympic sport? That's me several years ago. Brrrrr!
