National Gallery of Canada: Pop Life - Art in a Material World

Pop Life: Art in a Material World, opened at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa on June 11. As the sole North American venue for this exhibition, it runs through Sept. 19, 2010.

The exhibition features more than 200 paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, videos, installations, multiples and other ephemera from the realms of art and popular culture.

It explores the complex relationship between contemporary art, marketing and the mass media since the 1980s, when Andy Warhol's art was overshadowed by his own personal brand and celebrity. It was the era of 15 minutes of fame.

On display are works by dozens of artists, including Jeff Koons' stainless steel Rabbit; Keith Haring's New York Pop Shop, recreated in the exhibition space; Takashia Murakami's work that fuses fine art, film, fashion and music with the everyday; and the work of the YBAs (Young British Artists) such as Tracey Emim, Sarah Lucas and Gavin Turk. You'll even be able to chat with Damien Hirst's Twins.

Pop Life highlights many of the important, and at times controversial, moments during the past three decades when art and life met head-on.
