Great Big Sea's Alan Doyle stars alongside Russell Crowe in 'Robin Hood'

There's a Canadian connection to the latest Robin Hood film, this one titled ... Robin Hood. Directed by Ridley Scott, its tagline is the untold story of how the man became a legend.

Starring Russell Crowe, the film opened on May 14; the reviews have not been so hot. The New York Times headline is Rob the rich? Give to the Poor? Oh, Puh-leeze! while USA Today blasts, Russell Crowe's Robin Hood robs from the filmgoers.

Ouch.

The only review I overheard was at a salon in Beverly Hills where one young woman said she loved it and cried a lot. Maybe I'll wait for it to come out in DVD.

But hey, this post was about a Canuck connection with the film, and that would be Alan Doyle. One of the members of the Great Big Sea, he's playing the role of Allan A'Dayle, the Merry Men's Minstrel.

I saw Doyle while on a Ships'N Dip V Caribbean Cruise in February of 2009. He and his fellow band mates put on a great show, along with other headliners Sarah McLachlan and Barenaked Ladies.

PS: An alert reader left the comment that Kevin Durand, who plays the part of Little John in Robin Hood, is from Thunder Bay, Ontario. Doyle was born in Petty Harbour, Newfoundland.

Loved this movie!
I found an interview with both Kevin Durrand and Alan Doyle talking about the film. There pretty funny in it too.
