Whistler opens outdoor skating rink: Free admission and $5 skates

Outdoor Skating Rink: Funny that it's taken so long for Whistler to have an outdoor skating rink, but this season marks its debut. Located at the great lawn and pavilion of Whistler Olympic Plaza (home of the medals ceremonies and outdoor concerts during the 2010 Winter Games), admission is free. Hours are 11 AM - 9 PM daily with special hours on holidays (Dec. 25, 12-4; Dec. 31, 11-5 and 7-11 PM for New Year's Eve ticket holders). Skate rentals are available for $5 from 11 AM - 2 PM and 6-9 PM.

Whistler Holiday Experience: The indoor family fun zone returns Dec. 16 - Jan. 2 at the Whistler Conference Centre. Hours are 10-6 daily (closed Dec. 25 and 31). Activities include miniature golf, table games, bouncy castles, craft and video games. Santa stops by Dec. 17-18 from 1-5 PM. Admission is free.
Skeleton Slide Experience: The launch of the Skeleton Slide Experience at the Whistler Sliding Center is Dec. 16. Sliders start at the Maple Leaf Start, about 1/3 the way up the track, and navigate through six corners while reaching a maximum speed of up to 100 KM per hour (62 MPH).
Fire & Ice Show: On Dec. 18, this popular show returns to the base of Whistler Mountain on Sundays at 6:30 PM. Watch world-class athletes flip and twist their way through a burning ring of fire. The Sunday, Dec. 25 show will take place on Monday, Dec. 26. Admission is free.
New Year's Eve Celebrations: Enjoy ringing in the new year at Whistler's indoor and outdoor venues, 7-11 PM on December 31. The alcohol-free evening features family entertainment along with activities, concerts and fireworks. Tickets on sale at Whistler Visitor Centre, Millennium Place, Meadow Park Sports Centre or online at www.whistler.com.

It may have taken a while for Whistler to have its own ice skates facility but it sure is worth the wait! Holiday season is drawing near and with after its maiden success last year, there is nothing but big surprises in store come December.
