After trying for more than a decade, Canada has finally been made an "approved" destination by China. Canada was granted an Approved Destination Status (ADT) by China on Dec. 3, 2009.
"The Chinese travel market is considerable and will only grow in importance as that country's economy grows and people's means and desire to travel increase," said Barrett Fisher, president and CEO of Tourism Whistler.
Whistler is a growing destination for Chinese tourists, and could represent a significant percentage of Whistler's visitation in the future, said Fisher. Although Tourism Whistler has undertaken sales missions to China in the past, ADS allows Canadian tourism organizations to work directly with the tour and travel industry in China and to develop opportunities for group travel from China to Whistler.
A Conference Board of Canada survey forecasts that approved destination status is expected to increase the yearly rate of travel to Canada from China by 50 percent by the year 2015.
