Fortunately, they arrived at YVR with no ash interruption; their flight took them from Basel to Frankfurt and finally Vancouver. I suggested they spend a few nights there before driving south.
They found a good rate at the Loden Hotel, one of Vancouver's newer boutique hotels, and I phoned them on their arrival day. Coincidentally, they had just checked into their room late Friday afternoon, so I gave them a few ideas of how to spend two full days in my favorite west coast city.
You'll find other suggestions and details/links here.
